Trekking through the majestic Himalayas and valleys of North India is an experience like no other. The towering snow-clad peaks, gushing rivers, quaint hill towns and local culture enchant trekkers from India and abroad. Here are 10 of the best treks to embark on for beginners as well as experienced mountaineers.

Kedarnath Yatra, Uttarakhand

The pilgrimage trek to Kedarnath temple is a highlight among treks in the Himalayas. Situated at an altitude of 3,584m along Mandakini river, this revered temple dedicated to Lord Shiva sees thousands of devotees each year. The scenic trek route of around 40km starts from Gaurikund, passing through Garurchatti, Rambara, Lincholi before reaching Kedarnath. Sheltered accommodation in basic lodges and tents is available along the way. The path winds through lush green valleys, rocky terrain, snow clad peaks and glacial streams. April-June and September-October are suitable months for this moderate level Kedarnath trek with proper acclimatization and fitness.

Hampta Pass Trek 

Crossing over the beautiful Hampta Pass at an elevation of 4,298m, this trek offers breath-taking views of the Pir Panjal and Dhauladhar mountain ranges. The route takes you through verdant Kullu Valley, glacial valleys, alpine meadows carpeted in wildflowers, pine forests and pristine streams. The 5-6 day trek of around 40km can be done from mid-June to October by moderately experienced trekkers acclimatized to high altitude. The basecamp of Jobra acts as the starting point, passing through Jobri Nala camp, Chika, Hampta Pass, and Siagoru before ending at Chatru.

Kuari Pass Trek

Also called the Curzon Trail, this popular trek takes you across the Kuari Pass situated at a height of 4,268m. It unravels stunning mountain vistas of Nanda Devi, Kamet, Neelkanth and Dronagiri peaks on the way. The trek spans around 45 km across old tribal villages, lush meadows and forests of oak, rhododendron and deodar. The Kuari Pass trailhead at Joshimath leads to camps at Chitrakantha, Tali Top and Khulara before descending via Tapovan. Mid-September to November and March to early May are apt for this moderate trek in Uttarakhand.


Everest Base Camp 

For experienced and committed trekkers, the Everest Base Camp should be on the bucket list. Located at a towering height of 5,364m, it takes around 12 days of challenging high altitude trekking to reach here. Starting from Lukla, the epic journey passes through Namche Bazaar, Tengboche Monastery and Gorakshep before finally arriving at Everest Base camp. It offers adrenaline and excitement of climbing through the Khumbu glacier and icefall while soaking in outstanding views. April-May and October-November have ideal weather, but one must be physically and mentally prepared for extreme conditions.

Chadar Frozen River Trek

The Chadar trek through Zanskar valley is an adventurous winter trek in Ladakh across frozen rivers. The Zanskar river freezes during peak winters allowing trekkers to actually walk over it and camp in caves along the banks. Passing through deep ravines, snow-clad valleys and icy paths, this week long walk is considered one of the most challenging yet thrilling treks in North India. The highlights are the frozen waterfalls and Zanskar river's turquoise blue ice. January to early February is the ideal window with temperature dipping to minus 35°C so proper gear is a must.

Roopkund Trek 

Get enchanted by the sight of hundreds of mysterious skeletal remains and a frozen glacial lake on this eventful trek. Perched at a height of 5,029m, Roopkund lake has glaciers, snow-clad peaks, alpine meadows and forest trails along its route. Starting from Lohajung, the 8-day trek passes Bedni Kund, Bhagwabasa before culminating at Roopkund. The moderately difficult 50km trek can be done from May to October for the full experience of pristine peaks reflecting in the icy waters. Don’t miss the stunning view of Trishul massif on the way.

Dodital Trek  

Right next to Yamunotri, Dodital at a height of 3,024m makes for a refreshing trek in Uttarakhand. Surrounded by dense forests and snowy peaks, the scenic lake has crystal clear waters. Starting from Sangamchatti, the Dodital trek route of around 16km offers spectacular views of the Bandarpoonch, Swargarohini and Hanuman peaks. Passing through quaint villages, rhododendron forests and across rivulets, the easy-moderate trek can be done from April to November. It culminates at the serene Hanuman temple on the lakeshore.


Hemkund Sahib Trek

A major pilgrimage center for Sikhs and trekkers alike, Hemkund Sahib is a high altitude glacial lake situated at 4,632m. It is surrounded by seven mountain peaks known as ‘sapt sringsar’. Snow-covered passes, glaciers and waterfalls line the scenic 6 day trek of around 42km from Govindghat. It winds through verdant alpine meadows and hill villages before reaching Sri Hemkunt Sahib temple overlooking the lake. Ideal from May to October, this moderate-difficult trek requires good fitness levels and proper acclimatization.

Valley of Flowers Trek

Get engulfed by swathes of colorful blooms stretching endlessly as far as the eye can see on this wondrous trek in Uttarakhand. Nestled at 3,500m with the Zanskar ranges around, Valley of Flowers National Park is carpeted by endearing wild flowers from July to early September. Starting from Govindghat, the scenic uphill 57km trek of 4-6 days passes through Bhyundar village and Ghangria before entering the flowering valley. July and August are perfect but be prepared for monsoon rain and slippery trails.

Beas Kund Trek 

Situated at an incredible height of 3,660m, Beas Kund is a stunning glacial lake that feeds the Beas river as its source. This picturesque alpine lake surrounded by striking peaks is set amidst lush meadows. Trekkers have to pass through enchanting grasslands of Dhundi and Bakarthach to reach here. Starting from Solang valley, it is a short 2 day trek of around 20km gaining an elevation of 1,200m. Basic camping in tents and mountain lodges is available. Mid May-June and September-October suit this trek that needs high altitude readiness.
